The foundation wanted to raise the bar on its storytelling, with a subject that asks a lot of everyone involved: pregnancy and newborn care, where not every story ends happily.
The gala's theme was "Journey," the path families take through maternal and newborn care, and the films had to carry it. The foundation was also clear that families shouldn't be asked to come back to the hospital to tell their stories, because that setting can bring up hard memories. And the clock was tight: under eight weeks from signed contract to gala night, with four shoots to fit into that window.
The main film is a mother telling her family's story. Alongside it, we made a film introducing the doctors and nurses in maternal and newborn care, a sponsor reel, a film of the menu tasting with the gala's dinner sponsor, and full coverage of gala night with three videographers.
The foundation's communications team had already written the mother's story for the gala program, so we built the interview questions and shot list from that story and refined them together before the shoot. Then we filmed her at home, away from the hospital, in one visit planned around her family. On gala night we interviewed sponsors, donors, hospital leaders and a grateful patient family. In the weeks after, we cleaned up the interview audio and delivered a colour-graded footage library the foundation can keep using.
